When Should You Clean Your Gutters? A Seasonal Guide

Why timing matters

Your gutters work hardest during rainstorms, and they can only do their job when they are clear. Cleaning at the wrong time means debris builds up right when you need drainage the most. A well-timed cleaning prevents water damage to your foundation, fascia, and landscaping.

Spring (March - May)

After winter, gutters are often packed with granules from aging shingles, twigs from ice storms, and decomposed leaves that froze in place. A spring cleaning clears the system before the heavy April and May rains arrive. This is also the ideal time to inspect for any damage caused by ice or snow loads over winter.

Fall (September - November)

Fall is the most critical cleaning window. Deciduous trees shed thousands of leaves, and in Northern Virginia, oak and maple leaves can fill gutters in a matter of weeks. Schedule your fall cleaning after most leaves have dropped -- typically late October through mid-November -- so your gutters are clear heading into winter.

Summer and winter considerations

Summer is typically low-maintenance for gutters, but storms can deposit debris quickly. Check after any major weather event. In winter, clogged gutters can contribute to ice dams, which force water under your shingles. If you skipped a fall cleaning, a mild winter day is your last chance to clear things out before spring.

The recommended schedule

For most homes in Northern Virginia, we recommend cleaning gutters twice a year: once in late spring (April or May) and once in late fall (October or November). Homes surrounded by trees may need a third cleaning in midsummer. Gutter guards reduce frequency but do not eliminate the need for periodic maintenance.
